Yanai Yechiel
Yanai Yechiel (born 1968) is an artist and a magazine photographer, active in Israel and around the world. Among others, he is known for his column “Face matters” in Haaretz newspaper. He lives and works in Tel Aviv.
Over the years, Yechiel has developed a distinctive visual language that combines documentary realism with the aesthetics of classical portraiture. His works are often deeply personal, focusing on moments of vulnerability, intimacy, and emotional exposure. Through dramatic light, carefully constructed composition, and an almost painterly treatment of the human figure, he transforms portrait photography into a psychological encounter between subject and viewer.
Working across editorial and artistic contexts, Yechiel is particularly interested in the tension between beauty and fragility, identity and performance, as well as the emotional atmosphere of contemporary Israeli life. His portraits often feel timeless while remaining deeply rooted in the cultural and social reality surrounding them.
